History of Alpaca's

South America

The Moche people of Northern Peru have used Alpaca images in their art for centuries. Alpaca's have been domesticated for thousands of years, therefore, there are no wild alpacas. The closest living species to them are the wild Vicuña, which are also native to South America. As well as Camels and Llamas, an Alpaca is classified as a camelid. The Alpaca is larger than the Vicuña but smaller than the other camelid species.
